Out Of Touch Mom Gets Lesson In Pop Teen Culture

My daughter is currently between boyfriends. The other day, I asked her a question…

“So, any crushes you want to share with your old mom?”

“No. Not really,” she mused.

“Not really? Ooooo, sounds like there’s someone!” I said, smiling.

“Well, I suppose there’s always Taylor Lautner but there’s no chance of THAT ever happening,” she answered.

“Why not? Don’t sell yourself short! You are a beautiful, intelligent, wise, amazing young woman. Taylor would be lucky to have you! Why wouldn’t he be interested in you?”

“Well, geography for one thing,” she grinned.

“Your dad and I had a long distance relationship for a while and it worked out just fine,” I replied.

“Mom,” she laughed, “Do you even know who Taylor Lautner is?”

“No. Why?”

“He played Jacob Black in Twilight. Really, Mom. He quite honestly doesn’t even know I exist.” She’s laughing now, trying to hold it back.

“Oh,” I chuckled, “I see. Well, you’re probably right.”

And now we’re both in a fit of uncontrollable giggles.

(So I suppose my self-deprecating comment earlier about being her “old mom” is absolutely spot on. Oh, I am so out of touch!)

Oh, Jane you crack me up. For the record and it might make you feel better, I had no idea who he was until I read this post. So you’ve enlightened me!

  2. Steven Harris

I had a similar conversation with my mum when I was a teenager. She couldn;t work out why I wasn;t going to ask ‘this Debbie Harry’ for a date if I fancied her so much.

  3. Ha! Well you never know. And Taylor probably would be lucky to have her. He probably needs someone down the earth to bring him back to reality. Funny you didn’t know though 🙂

  4. You totally had me going there too. I didn’t know who Taylor Lauter is either. I’m officially living under a rock now. Oh how I never thought this day would come.

  5. That’s funny! And here at first I thought you were just being a very encouraging supportive mom. 😉

  6. I saw the “New Moon” movie with some young 20-something co-workers. They all sighed over Taylor. When they noticed my lack of enthusiasm they asked if I thought he was cute. I told him that he’s a cute BOY. A boy that is only one year older than my son!

  7. I’m laughing so hard over here….

  8. Well at least you know who Ke$ha is!

My daughters are a few years older than yours so I officially gave up trying to stay in touch with who’s hot and who’s not a few years back!

  10. I love that you can talk with your daughter like that. Sounds like she is lucky to have you as her “old mom.” 😉

  11. I bet she could still woo him! She’d just need a little help to make that first introduction. I don’t suppose she has any werewolf friends that could help arrange something??

  12. I don’t know Jane; I think it may be even sadder that I knew who he was…

  13. Taylor who? I didn’t know either. But you had a moment with your kid so it’s all good.

  14. I am so glad that I had no idea who Taylor Lautner is either so I was able to follow the story and get to LOL too. 🙂

  15. I knew the name but didn’t know why! All I can say is that I hope to have sweet, honest chats like that with my daughter down the road. She’s lucky to have an “old” mom like you!! My mom most certainly would have said, “you’re right, he’s out of your league” before even knowing he was a celeb! Anything to prevent my feelings getting hurt. I could have used your type of support!

Hahaha! That is so funny! Such a cute mom/daughter moment.

  17. Okay, Jane, now you’ve got me intrigued about this long-distance relationship you so casually mentioned there … does this mean I need to move you to my special “current and former fellow commuters” blogroll?

  18. I have lived moments just like that one you shared with your daughter numerous times with my son…There are times when I think I live on another plante (smile).

You’re totally gonna be Taylor’s MIL.

Taylor and your daughter sittin’ in a tree…

(Might as well dream big for her, right?)

I thought Taylor was dating Taylor Swift – or so one of my kids said a few weeks ago … which means it is probably over by now.

Tell her to go for it!!!

  21. So so funny! Tell her to wish upon a star…you never know…
    🙂

  22. That is too funny! I didn’t know who he was either until my 9th grade girls started gushing about him.

  23. I’ve managed to avoid anything Twilight-related. At my age, I can’t risk it. There aren’t that many uncluttered crevices in my memory and I don’t want something like this sticking. I’ve forgotten his name already. 🙂

  24. I have given up any attempt at keeping up with what passes for pop culture in the teenage mind. (UGH, do I feel ancient even admitting that.)

    🙂

  25. Is it bad that I’ve seen both Twilight movies and had no idea what the kid’s name is?
